DAVID T.MCKENZIE

BIO
David T. McKenzie was born in Ft. Lewis, Washington, and he has lived most of his life in Oklahoma. He received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science from Southwestern Oklahoma State University, a Master of Science degree and a Master of Arts degree from Northeastern Oklahoma State University, and a Juris Doctorate degree from the University of Oklahoma College of Law in 1988. From 1988 to 1989, Mr. McKenzie was an Assistant City Attorney in Moore, Oklahoma, where his duties included criminal prosecutions and civil municipal defense. He was in private practice from 1989 to 2000, where he specialized in criminal and constitutional litigation. At one time or another, he has represented almost every adult bookstore and gentlemen’s club in Oklahoma City. He is a former member of the First Amendment Lawyers Association. He retired from the Office of the Public Defender of Oklahoma County in May 2015 and is currently Of Counsel with the Oklahoma City office of Mulinix, Edwards, Rosell & Goerke. Mr. McKenzie is an Adjunct Professor of Law teaching Trial Practice at the Oklahoma City University School of Law. Mr. McKenzie is licensed to practice in the State of Oklahoma, the United States District Court for the Northern District of Texas, the United States District Court of the Western District of Oklahoma, the Tenth Circuit Court of Appeals, and the United States Supreme Court. He is the legal analyst for the KFOR television news station in Oklahoma City. He is a former member of the Civil Procedure and Evidence Code Committee of the Oklahoma Bar Association and a member of the Oklahoma Bar Association Bench and Bar Committee. He is also a member of the Rules of Professional Conduct Committee of the Oklahoma Bar Association. He was rated AV-Preeminent by Martindale-Hubbell in November 1993, which was his first year of rating eligibility and has retained that rating for the last 22 years. Mr. McKenzie is listed in the “Top Lawyers of Oklahoma” in both of the areas of criminal defense and appellate law. He is the 1997 recipient of the Clarence Darrow Award, given by the Oklahoma Criminal Defense Lawyers Association for outstanding criminal defense litigation and was named a “Super Lawyer” in the area of criminal law in Oklahoma in 2008. He was the 2010 recipient of the Oklahoma Bar Association Criminal Law Section’s “Professional Advocate Award, Defender of the Year” and he received the 2011 Barry Albert Award from the Oklahoma County Criminal Defense Lawyers Association. Mr. McKenzie is the 2014 recipient of the Oklahoma Bar Association’s Earl Sneed Award for excellence in continuing legal education and the 2014 recipient of the Oklahoma Bar Association’s Maurice Merrill Golden Quill Award for excellence in writing. Mr. McKenzie has tried approximately 200 criminal jury trials and six civil jury trials. In March 2015, he was appointed to the Board of Directors of the Oklahoma chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union. David McKenzie is also a professional actor represented by Magna Talent Agency in Oklahoma City. He has appeared in six motion pictures, numerous television commercials and has been a talk radio show host. Mr. McKenzie is the chairman-elect of the Criminal Law Section of the Oklahoma Bar Association. He is also a member of the Board of Directors of the Oklahoma County Criminal Defense Lawyers Association. On July 25, 2006, United States Senator Edward M. Kennedy, in a debate of the floor of the United States Senate, called David McKenzie a lawyer of courage for his public statements that racism is a pervasive problem in the criminal justice system in Oklahoma.
